You’ll find all sorts of hidden treasures, beauty spots and secret sites! You’ll end up wondering why you’ve never explored them before.
The idea is to embrace all that the UK has to offer and embrace it as a tourist. Be open-minded and you’ll find places in the UK that closely resemble other places in the world giving you an all-new perspective on the UK as a whole.
Here are just a few of the top places in the UK that will make you feel like you’re abroad.
Highlands, Scotland = Canada
The remoteness in the Highlands of Scotland can somewhat equal that in Canada. Roaming the Highlands of Scotland is the ultimate escape for those desperate to escape the hustle of cities and the best part is that you haven’t got to worry about bears! If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a glimpse of red deer, golden eagles, pine martens and if you reach the northern coast, you may be super lucky enough to see humpback whales. If you want to go super adventurous then Scotland is one of the few places that tolerates wild camping.
Portmeirion, Wales = Italy
The colours of Portmeirion’s buildings hold similarities in many Italian coastal towns. Palm trees, colourful buildings and occasionally the warm weather will open up your inner Italian. Portmeirion attracts visitors from all over for its deviant looks that are not found elsewhere in Wales. Just don’t get too carried away by speaking Italian here as it won’t get you very far.
St Michael’s Mount, Cornwall = Mont-Saint-Michel, France
Some argue that St Michael’s Mount offers the same amount of awe as its rival in France. Both are tidal islands which means when the tide has gone out, you can walk across to visit. While the two slightly differ, they both make superb pictures for photographers as well as make you believe you’re in a fairytale setting.
Shetland Islands, Scotland = Norway
In the grand aspect of the world, Norway and mainland Scotland are not too far from each other. You can however convince yourself that you are in Norway by just admiring the cute and picturesque buildings in the Shetland Islands that closely resemble homes and buildings in Norway. Although the Shetland Islands won’t always offer the same pleasant weather as Norway, the Islands can certainly offer you adventure far away from urban life.
Royal Pavilion, Brighton = India
Taj Mahal is an awesome place to see for certain but if India is off the list, you can achieve that same eastern feel by visiting the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. Inspired by Chinese and Indian architecture, the Royal Pavilion was originally a royal residence, built in three stages as a seaside retreat for George, Prince of Wales, who became the Prince Regent in 1811, and King George IV in 1820. Today it stands a museum.
Chinatown, London = China
Who doesn’t love Chinatown? It’s a fantastic place make to believe you’re in the Far East. You’ll often hear Chinese spoken around you while you stroll through the streets of London that are decorated with Chinese symbols such as dragons and lanterns. Keep an eye out for street signs, which are written in English and Chinese and cultural dishes. London’s Chinatown is close to key attractions such as Leicester Square, Theatreland and Soho. Its central location makes it an easy place to get to by public transport.
Isles of Scilly, Cornwall = Caribbean
The Isles of Scilly will have you believing you’re in the Caribbean from the very moment you arrive. Palm trees, crystal blue waters, warm weather, and soft sandy beaches all will change your perception of the typical British landscape and weather. Although the Isles can be expensive, they are certainly cheaper than a flight to the Caribbean.
Isle of Skye, Scotland = Iceland
The Isle of Skye is full of mystery and certainly gives the likes of Iceland a run for their money. Beautifully haunting, the Isle of Skye is a fantastic place for a unique getaway. With its moody but jaw-dropping landscape, the Isle of Skye can keep a person curious to unravel the Isles secrets for a lifetime.
Lake District, England = Lake Geneva, Switzerland
The Lake District is by far one of the most epic places in the UK for its scenery. There are numerous lakes to explore and if you’re brave enough, even swim in, which many take on that of Lake Geneva. The hills, gorges, lakes and forests are so impressive that they look like they are capable of competing with the scenery in Switzerland. If you’re looking for adventure close to home, then the Lake District is ideal.
Lavender Fields, Norfolk = Provence, France
The famous purple fields of Provence are a beautiful sight to behold and do deserve a visit of their own. However, you can appreciate the same smells and purple views in Norfolk. The right angle and adventurous attitude can have you convinced that you’re in the Provence region of France. Complete your experience in the evening with a glass of French wine while you soak up the aroma of lavender.
The UK certainly does give the rest of the world a run for its money and chances are you are pleasantly surprised by this list. Whether you plan on visiting the UK, travelling on a tight budget or if travelling outside of the UK is not an option, there will always be something different to see or do. Now grab your camera and fool everyone that you’re travelling the world!
